Flash prototype

Here is my photoframe flash prototype, you will see the functions we provide in it, I will use the swf file on my little UMPC which is like a small laptop, the UMPC is very small and just like a photoframe.
First is about my presentation of the prototype, the presentation are divided into two parts: hardware & software.
The software I’ve used is Adobe Flash CS3, I use that tool to make a flash program, it displays how the digital frame works, when users turn on the switch (we suppose the button in welcome page to be the switch), it will display photos automatically, and the photo will be changed in 10 seconds into another. And after that, when you click the screen, the function buttons will come up, the buttons include messages, IP phone, videos and settings. If there is any messages incoming, it would be shown in the left bottom of the screen, besides different colour means the different types of messages.
When users click on the messages, it will turned into message box, it shows the recently messages users received, users can do some operations here like accept the IPphone, watch the videos which are recently received, and watch the text messages in detail, besides this, the IPphone button will lead users into a Skype page, it will automatically added the person who contacts the users, and users can simply call any person in the contact list by one click. Then the video button will let users watch the videos, the first video users watch is the latest, and users can also watch previous ones by click prev button. In the setting session, users can simply change the light, the voice ect. All the operations are aim to make a easy-use digital photo frame.
The hardware I used is a UMPC, which is a type of laptop, but only got 5.6 inch, I think this would be the best model of our digital photo frame, besides another advantage of this is the touch screen, our digital photo frame is also touch screen available.
Diana watched the presentation and gave me some feedback, I want to implement the prototype more perfectly but Diana said I needn’t to do that, she said we should put our attention on the process of gathering the idea and making the prototype, like some approaches we used. So I think I can follow Diana’s advices and provide them in the blog.

Sketch of the model- Digital Photo Frame
The Features of the Digital Photo Frame:
1.Camera- highly sophisticated camera
2.Camera display light- it helps the user to identify whether the camera is switched on or off by displaying red light when it is on and no light when it is off.
3.WI-FI - it gets displayed on the screen.
4.light indication for the user to identify whether the internet is switch on or off.
5.light indication for the user to identify whether the blue tooth is switched on or off.
6.This digital photo frame have a function key which is embedded into the screen which has special functionality
7.video facility and which is viewed using flash player.
8.online phone using skype.
9.Microphone
10.In this frame it is provided which a special feature for the user to know when they have received messages.
In order to make it more clear to differentiate the type of message received, i,e whether it is text,video, they are differentiated using colors used for each type.
11.The digital photo frame has a special feature which will benefit the end user, that is the frame is made up of photo sensitive cells that will be an alternative for the rechargeable batteries provided and this frame has a touch screen facility to operate the functionality.

Here I am going to talk about what is a good design for users.
This is the result I learned from Diana's slide, because after learning that slide, I found that I have learned a lot.
As Diana said, a good design contains three parts: User centred approach, multidisciplinary perspective and interactive design cycles.
Due to our digital photo frame, I wanna have a explain about them:
User centred approach: this means we should put users to be the first of our product, our mainly users are elder people, so we should consider what they need most, so the methods like interview, focus group or questionaires are needed, from these approaches we can get their feedbacks of requirements. Through these feedbacks we can then design the products which fits their expectation. Elder people usually don't know how to use computers, so the design should be as simple as possible, we have tried that many other functions but they do not fit to our users: elder people, so we choose to be simple at last.
Multidisciplinary perspective: this means that there should be a wide technology designing group, in our 3 people group, I think we did our best in role play, Susan is good at drawing, and Gramham has wide experience of presentation and talking in public conferences, and my advantage is good at computing, so we decided that Susan draw a prototype, Gramham using Powerpoint, and I use Flash CS3, which makes our digital photo frame got different forms of prototypes.

Actually we followed this cycle in our designing. When we choose that our designing is a digital photo frame, we have been to many search engines to see the existing technologies and see whether our idea is new, this is just a example, we’ve done some other explorations of our design, in prototyping part, we’ve used three different prototypes to make our design. After all the evaluation and test part, we test our prototypes to users in order to see whether they feel it useful or not, after testing we get some evaluations from the testing.

About the idea of group assignment
After the frame prototype has been found in the internet, I begin to find some new ideas for interaction design prototype, because it is a design, so I have to think some new ideas.
One of my idea is to build a machine hand! It can be put on user’s hands, and they can control the hands of screen, they can use telephone calls, play sports, shopping, it’s just like a real world in the screen, users can enter into the world without going outdoors. The objective is to let users just stay at home and feel the outside world, it’s very convenient and humanistic, for example, if users want to buy a cell phone, they can just simply use the machine hands move to the cell shops, and there will be lots of cell phones on the counter, they can choose one they like by hands, and also can test it like test buttons, making a phone call… the things in the screen is just like a real world.
I have made a sketch of how machine hands work, I’ll upload it after I take photo of it.
This idea is very creative I think, but there must be many problems in implement, so finally I cancel the idea. After that, I made a new idea: automatic wheel chair, it means there is a console which had many buttons, one of them called RECORD, which can record the path of the wheel chair, this is very convient in real world, because many people need it, they needn’t use their hands to make the chair move. But the problem is as Gaby said, it’s very hard in the protyping, should we just let one person sit on the chair and demonstrating? This is reasonable, we don’t have consoles, and we can not let the chair move automatic.
So finally we decided to continue our plan, which is photo frame, but more powerful, more creative. Our new photo frame include such functions: Wireless enabled( can access to wireless internet), Receive videos, images, messages.(By simply steps), Screen touch enabled(Clear and easy), IP video phone(Which is free and fast, also including video chat), SolarPanel & Power backup(more than one choice for charging), the objective is for old people to use to contact with their children which maybe outside for working or studying, this control panel is very easy to use, and I have made the sketch of it, I’ll upload it which will make my idea clearer.
